it means you're three hours late, far as i'm concerned
[ east cost > west coast, even if he does spend most of his time bopping elsewhere around the globe. ]
but good. case you missed it, i'm putting together a committee. nothing political, nothing administrative — like a grand jury that skips the judge. figure you could fit in nicely in a setup like that
said recent events are precisely what i'm looking to preempt next time which leads into the next detail
javert's involved not actually on the committee but he's agreed to follow any decision handed down and to drop unilateral action for approval before doing it i can understand that this may be...unpalatable for some folks
I don't mind if he's involved. Much, anyway. Not enough to reject it out of hand.
Apologies - what he did hit a sore spot. It's why I tendered my resignation from the prison. If he will truly follow the decisions of the committee, then I won't object to it.
I know I've been in the wrong on my cases before, and they would have resulted in death sentences, but never did I take the law into my own hands on the matter. True justice can only be meted out when there is a chance for the accused to have a defense, and then the defense and prosecution must be able to seek the truth together.
To give you a shorter version of what I'm trying to say: Yes, I would like to join this committee. I have a little bit of knowledge and experience of the defense's side, and I won't pursue a "win" over the truth.
[ calm down, Dick Wolf, he can hear the dun-dun of your law and order spiel clear enough. ]
appreciate the cliffnotes there, buddy glad to have you aboard
way i'm picturing it is: i've got a decent pool of people to sit and make the decisions javert will continue on as the inspector side of things, bringing matters to the group, and you can act as general inquisitor to see if there's merit and walk the body of it past the arbiters
he's going to listen to us because he's used to being a cog in the machine with absolutely zero critical thinking involved past following clues from point A to point B
not saying it for an excuse but the guy's two steps removed from the guillotine being the final round of appeals, you know?
Yes - it's a pity, really. He doesn't seem to recognize that the law is man-made and thus can be flexible, and is not necessarily the same as justice.
You probably wouldn't be surprised that his line of thinking doesn't stop at him. Some people will do anything to get their verdicts. He seems like a man who'll do anything to get his collar.

What sort of questions?
<dismas>
that true or were you blowing smoke up the asses in question?

Oh? That sounds interesting. I'd be willing to work with that council, especially in light of...recent events.

don't get me wrong - i know i'm not any kind of saint and i'd never claim to be
but shit, there's still some lines out there

However, I have the distinct impression that he's going to listen to us not because he thinks we're in the right, but because we're fellow monsters.

even in a more enlightened era, can't say i've seen many in that line of work different from what j's put on showcase
but doubt you're raring for a fun and games debate on criminal justice ethics
